Repeat the Last Action in Word

Work smarter, not harder! Word tip – Microsoft offers a repeat last action command that works in many Word scenarios. It’s especially helpful with common commands like applying formatting, but can also be used for actions such as inserting page breaks.

For example, let’s say we want to emphasize text in a document by formatting it as bold, with italics, and a larger font size. Using this tip, we can apply the format to some text and repeat the formatting action on other text many times using a quick keystroke!

  1. Select the text to be formatted.
  2. On the “Home” tab, in the “Font” group, click the dialog box launcher.
  3. Choose “Bold Italic” and the desired font size and choose OK. The selected text is formatted as bold, with italics, and a different font size.
  4. Select the next word(s) where this same format should be repeated.
  5. Press [F4]. The formatting action is repeated.
  6. If desired, repeat steps 4 and 5 as many times as needed.
