Use a Keystroke to Change Cell References in Excel

Work smarter, not harder!

Microsoft Excel– As an Excel user, do you want a quick way to change a relative cell reference to an absolute or mixed cell reference? Instead of manually adding dollar signs ($$) to a formula to create absolute and mixed cell references, use this tip!

Use a Keystroke to Change Cell References to Absolute, Relative, or Mixed

  1. Click in the cell containing the formula to change. The formula is displayed in the Formula Bar.
  2. In the Formula Bar, click the cell reference to change; or,
    click next to the cell reference to change; or,
    select the cell reference to change.
  3. Press [F4] enough times to toggle between the reference styles available: Absolute – $C$14, Mixed – C$14, Mixed – $C14, Relative – C14.
  4. When the desired reference is displayed, press [Enter].
